Ashton/Demi celebrate Twitter 1m

Ashton Kutcher has pipped CNN to the post in a race to gain over one million followers on microblogging site Twitter.

The A-list star - already known to be a prolific Twitterer after such antics as posting pictures of wife Demi in her underwear and helping propel Britain’s Got Talent star, Susan Boyle, to stardom this week - has defeated one of the biggest news media organisations to win the most followers.

The Hollywood actor said his victory proved that individuals can have as much clout as major networks.

Kutcher and Demi celebrated the occasion by dancing around the room to Kool and the Gang’s Celebration, popping a bottle of champagne to boot. And, of course, the whole episode is there for all to see on Kutcher’s Twitter update.

The triumph wasn't just an ego boost for the actor, however, who three days earlier promised to donate 10,000 mosquito nets to charity ahead of World Malaria Day, if he won the challenge.

Acknowledging the win, Kutcher commented: ‘I found it astonishing that one person can actually have as big of a voice online as what an entire media company can on Twitter.’
