Madonna and Stella hit the town

Madonna was beaming last night as she enjoyed a pick-me-up dinner with good friend Stella McCartney.

The Queen of Pop obviously needed a good girls' night out after she arrived in England this week following an unsuccessful bid to adopt four-year-old Malawian Mercy James.

She was said to be left 'devastated and shaking' as she left the girl in Malawi after a judge rejected her bid to adopt her because she had not lived in the country for 18-24 months prior to application.

The 50-year-old was grim-faced as she returned from Malawi on Sunday, landing at Luton airport, where she was greeted by ex-hubby Guy Ritchie - there to take sons David and Rocco to stay at his Wiltshire estate.

But there was a smile back on Madge's face last night as she left top London eaterie Ciccone's with her fashion designer pal Stella.

The star even managed to embrace one of spring's top trends – monochrome – in a cute, printed summer dress.

Thoughts will, however, inevitably turn back to the adoption soon.

The star's lawyer, Alan Chinula, described the judgment as 'incomprehensible', saying the same court had approved her adoption of David Banda in 2006.

He said they were appealing the decision in Malawi's Supreme Court, and believed they had a good chance of winning.
