Mel Sykes to replace Fern Britton on This Morning

Melanie Sykes has been lined up to join Philip Schofield on the This Morning sofa after Fern Britton's surprise resignation, it has emerged.

Mel is best known for her role alongside Des O'Connor presenting daytime show Today with Des and Mel, and as the 90s face of Boddington's beer.

Fern Britton will leave This Morning in July after quitting last month, and Mel is expected to step into her shoes when the show returns from its summer break in September.

Mel will have her work cut out as Fern and Phil shared a warm, funny on-screen chemistry, but Mel was successful at doing the same with Des, so bosses feel she will be able to form a good bond with Philip.

A source told The People: 'Everyone is convinced she is a fantastic signing.

'She forged a brilliant partnership with Des and we expect the same formidable rapport with Philip.

'It's a tough gig but we are convinced she is a fantastic signing.'

This is great news, it was going to be hard to find someone to replace Fern but Mel is the perfect solution. i used to love watching her with Des.

I will really miss Fern. She is very profesional yet still warm, funny and sincere. She is a real person with a family. It is a shame she has had to leave under such circumstances. Mel Sykes is not experienced enough and does not have enough charisma to fill such big shoes.

I think Fern is great and has wonderful empathy. No way can Mel step into her shoes - I agree with Emma, she is totally annoying and her voice grates! I can't think of anyone worse. Time to turn off to This Morning after numerous years I fear....

Mel Sykes wouldn't be my favourite to replace Fern but then again I don't think anyone can "replace" her. I didn't take to Des & Mel coz it all seemed so staged but with Philip's support I might warm to her.
