Young women put love ahead of ambition

A survey of women approaching their 30th birthday has found that a clear majority would choose to prioritise their relationship over their career.

Seventy per cent of the 1,800 women polled said that this was the right time to put their relationship first and ambition second. More than 80 per cent of the women, all born in 1979,  considered this was the perfect time to get married.

According to the Mail, this shows a clear change within a decade. Ten years ago, many more women were focusing on their careers well into their thirties and delaying children. This has led to a big increase in older mothers. The number of women having children in their forties doubled between 1997 and 2007.

"I remember turning 30 and making a conscious decision to put off having children and settling down," Jayne Laurier, 40, an IT consultant director from Leeds, told the Mail. "I almost felt it was disloyal to even consider relationships and having a family. They were way down on my to-do list."
