Rihanna and Chris on a break

The latest update on Rihanna and Chris Brown’s relationship? They’re ‘taking a break’, according to reports.

The pop star is currently in New York, while Chris is spending time in LA, following their huge bust-up last month.

The couple are not, however, calling it a formal split, despite Brown's domestic battery charges.

Chris, 19, allegedly assaulted Rihanna during a heated argument in his sports car the day before the Grammys, which was reportedly sparked by Rihanna’s fury over a text Chris received from a woman he had previously had a relationship with.

Brown is now said to be working on his next album in LA, while the Umbrella singer spends time with friends.

A source told E! News: 'He's just putting ideas down for some songs he wrote.

'He needs to feel like he's moving forward.'

Meanwhile, Rihanna was spotted in New York last weekend, celebrating her 21st birthday.

The previous night she had hit a Manhattan restaurant with mentor Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé.
