The down-to-earth Brit, who picked up the gong for Best Actress, revealed that she wasn't the only member of her family to enjoy award success.

'My mum won a pickled onion competition in the local pub just before Christmas and the Reading Evening Post sent me a picture of her holding her jar,' she said after the ceremony.

'Well, Reading Evening Post, here's your next Winslet picture.'

And there was no rest for Kate, as, after a night of celebrations, she was up bright and early the following morning for an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show.

The Reader actress told Oprah that she was 'obsessed' with her Oscar and couldn't stop looking at it.

'She said: 'I keep looking at him and going, 'Oooh wow.' Looking at every little piece - very nice little bottom.

'It really is an outer body experience - you just think: 'This can't be happening.'

'I felt for sure this was going to be Meryl Streep's. I honestly did not think for one second that it was going to be me.'
