Chris Brown, who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend Rihanna last week, has issued a statement saying he’s ‘sorry and saddened’ about what happened.

The 19-year-old R&B singer insisted that much of what has been reported in the press is untrue – but that he is seeking counselling and advice from his pastor and mother.

Through his publicist Michael Sitrick, he said: 'Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired.

‘I am seeking the counselling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person.

'Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong.’

He added that he could not expand further until his case has been resolved.

Brown was arrested on 8 February – the night of the Grammy Awards, where Rihanna was supposed to perform – after the couple got into an alleged physical row.

He was released on $50,000 bail after being arrested for investigation of making a criminal threat.

Both Brown and Rihanna were nominated for a Grammy, and were scheduled to appear, but cancelled at the last minute, owing to the row.

Leona Lewis last week denied any involvement in the row, after reports suggested Rihanna flew into a rage when she spotted the singer talking to Brown.
