How to get into ...

Joaquin Phoenix bizarre interview

He’s already puzzled the showbiz world with his declaration he’ll quit acting, but Joaquin Phoenix has hammered the nail in the coffin with his weirdest interview to date.

The Walk The Line star appeared on the David Letterman show this week, promoting his latest, and presumably final, movie, Two Lovers, in which he stars opposite Gwyneth Paltrow.

Settling into the interviewee chair sporting an unkempt beard and dark glasses, Phoenix appeared aloof, speaking in monosyllables, whilst chewing gum and mumbling the occasional response that was hardly decipherable.

Letterman led the interview amusingly, leaving the audience unsure whether the whole scenario was a set-up or not. There was plenty of guffawing as Letterman joked: ‘What can you tell us about your days with the Unabomber?’(a reference to the terror suspect accused of planting a series of bombs in America in the 90s).

As the interview came to a close, Letterman had his final say on the disastrous dialogue saying: ‘Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.’

Strange and unusual-think it's a joke but think he's great!

Honestly, it concerns me. It makes me uncomfortable that people are laughing at him -He seems to be having some kind of breakdown.

I can't bear to watch it - I just want to give him a hug. He's such a talented man, yet obviously isn't well at all.

Its not a joke. looks like Joaquin has had enough, and wasn't up for Lettermans idiotic jibes. He's squirming in his seat and obviously has always hated interviews. He's always taken himself very seriously. The load of beard jokes at the start sets it all off badly.

It was obviously just for a laugh. Joaquin is an amazing actor and can't wait to see the new film!

Letterman is treating him like jerk.
This is like a freak show,
Thank God Joaquin has decided to turn his back on this kind of humiliation.
Leave the man alone.

Very strange, i wonder looking at him if he is suffering from some kind of depression and the medication is having this side effect, or maybe he's become an introvert and is trying to shy away from the media.

Had he just woken up from a coma, was he in disguise or was that really him? Weird beyond belief.

He just completely took the mickey out of him...it was uncomfortable to watch !!..What a rubbish interviewer !!

Joaquin is in full control .. he is acting here .. not trying for a reason unknown to us. You can see at times he is fighting not to laugh or smile. He is angry alright and serious about his cause. He's just not gonna be a puppet!

If Letterman hadn't started the interview with a personal attack perhaps Joaquin would have been more willing to participate in the interview. I think he was just reacting to the way he was being treated.

Obviously a joke.... He's an actor..of course he's going to make it convincing!

David Letterman was so rude to him! No wonder he was uncomfortable, the audience were laughing like crazy at things which were obviously not funny to him. Not everyone is at ease doing the chat show circuit, which is about telling the same 'anecdotes' over and over again. Honestly, I think Joaquin did well to keep his temper. I hope he doesn't give up acting.

Is Joaquin on drugs???
Comment by Kelly on February 12 22:08

I found it distressing and had to stop watching. Letterman appeared to be making fun of (bullying)someone suffering from a form of mental illness, so it was distasteful in the extreme. If Joaquin was acting, what was the purpose of the scene? Has anyone ascertained whether Joaquin is well?
Comment by Jackie on February 13 01:03

either Joaquin is ill or on drugs or none of this, it's sad to see that everyone was very amused by his strange behavior.i could understand Letterman for trying to save his show (if that was for real), but the audience made everything to look like a grotesque show. real or not, nothing can change the fact that Joaquin is amazing actor .
