Slumdog now Oscar favourite after success at DGA awards

Slumdog Millionaire looks set to clean up at the Oscars after Danny Boyle was named Best Director by the Directors Guild of America over the weekend.

Only six times in the 61-year history of the awards has the winner failed to take home the Oscar for Best Director.

The movie – about a boy from the Mumbai slums who competes on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? – has now won gongs at four major awards.

The cast won the ensemble prize at the SAG Awards and took home four Golden Globes, as well as having success at the Producers Guild of America.

The feel-good film also has ten nominations for the Oscars later this month.

When accepting his award this weekend, Danny Boyle pondered on the irony that the film very nearly went straight to DVD after Warner Brothers closed down the art-house label on which it was to be released.

Luckily, Fox Searchlight stepped in with a deal.

'I should start by curiously thanking Warner Bros for actually having the grace to do the right thing, when I think it would have been a lot easier to do the wrong thing, and pass the film on to Fox Searchlight, who are an extraordinary bunch of people,' he said.
