Oprah considered for Obama’s Senate seat

By Ruth Doherty  on Friday 30 January 2009

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Oprah Winfrey

Oprah for President was a popular rhetoric a few years ago – and it looks like the chat show queen was actually considered to take President Obama’s seat in the Senate.

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich told Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America: ’She seemed to be someone who had helped Barack Obama in a significant way to become President.’

But when pushed on why he eventually asked former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris instead, he said: ‘[Oprah] probably wouldn’t take it, [and] if I offered it to her, how do you make sure it doesn’t look like a gimmick?’

In fact, it is alleged that Rod actually tried to sell Obama’s seat to the highest bidder.

An accusation he denies.

His impeachment trial started this week. ‘I’ll have a chance in a criminal case to show my innocence and bring witnesses,’ he said.
