Lily Allen: Religion screwed me up

Lily Allen isn’t one to mince her words – and the straight-talking star now appears to have hit out at Catholicism.

The star says she is a ‘cruel victim’ of religion after being left ‘confused’ by her Catholic upbringing.

‘I'm confused by religion,' says the 24-year-old.

'I was brought up in a Catholic school and they told me gays were bad, adultery was bad and drugs were bad.

'At the same time, all my mum's friends were gay, my dad was having various affairs and there were drugs in the house when I was a kid – so it was a bit cruel.'

The singer is also calling for more integration of different religions in British society, saying: ‘Why is [BBC TV programme] Songs Of Praise always Christian? Where's the Hindu Songs Of Praise?
‘The Islamic Songs Of Praise? We all pay our TV license! I don't like Christianity much.'

Allen said she sees more sense in other religions, adding: 'Hinduism is cool. I'll put them up near the top.

‘But it's too dangerous for me to rank them. I'll get into serious trouble.'

The Smile star’s comments came hours after she sparked outrage by suggesting that cocaine use is ‘no problem at all’ for some people.

Sounds more like Lilly's parents screwed her up than "religion". Responsible parenting dictates that you don't knowingly expose your child to things that would harm them physically, psychologically and emotionally such as drugs and an unstable home life. Her comments also highlight the inconsistency between values taught at home and school. I believe that if you send your child to a faith school you should uphold those values at home.

Very sad - she's missed the point completely. She obviously doesn't know what Christianity is actually about at all. But then, I think that's the case for the vast majority of our population. It's about having a relationship with Jesus who loves each one of us and died to take the punishment we deserve.
And is she saying she thinks that drugs and adultery AREN'T bad?
Also, with no disrespect to Hinduism and Islam aren't this country's traditional religions, nor, as far as I know, do they participate in congregational singing, which is why they don't have their own songs of praise.

Cruel?! are you serious?! Your dad cheating on your mom - that's cruel!!!! Drugs in the house around young children - that's cruel!!!!

Lily I am sorry you had hypocritical parents who didn't walk the talk. That is for sure a big reason Christianity is so screwed up. The term Christianity is also screwed up since it has little to do with what Jesus taught and alot to do with mans foolishness. All I am saying is before you blast Real Christianity Lily get to know it better. You only had a false impression of it. Hope one day ya get to know Jesus as I do. I know full well I will never hear from you on this matter so I just pray the Lord Himself will show ya.

I love how all the religious people making comments are condoning hating gay people by calling her comments stupid. I also love how people are getting so worked up with her - the truth hurts. If there was a Hindu Songs of Praise it would not get broadcast on mainstream tv surely. All I know is that the only relgious prograammes I see on tv are about Christianity.

Very sad to read the story of Lily allen, i think that she is just confused but deep inside she wants to be saved, i will pray for her because she seems like a nice person and God Tells us to love each other like He Loves Us. God Bless You Lily Allen
