How to get into ...

Katie Holmes spending spree

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Katie Holmes and Suri

Katie Holmes has been doing her bit to boost the economy during the credit crunch – by spending £10 million in just six months.

Since moving to New York last July to appear in All My Sons on Broadway, Tom Cruise’s wife has managed to rack up the whopping sum – with most of it going on real estate.

The actress is believed to have bought three apartments in the block where she is staying. She was originally staying in a flat owned by Tom, but decided to invest in apartments in the building, along with converting a personal gym for Suri.

Other costs eating up her hard-earned pennies are reportedly childcare, clothes and socialising.

The 30-year-old has been so cash-splash-happy, the New York Post has dubbed her ‘Manhattan’s Most Valued Shopper’ during the credit crunch.

The paper joked: ‘She has been valiantly doing her bit to boost our economy.’

Katie is expected to move back to the Cruise family’s Los Angeles home after the play finishes next week.

What a stupid women; do something worthwhile with your money. Half the world parties and the other half starves its grotesque. Surely there is only so much shopping that any one person can do and in reality far in excess of what she needs. I can only think she is an unhappy woman who tries to cheer herself up with shopping.

this is obscene when people are struggling to make ends meet

So what would you have her do with the money? Save it all in a bank? Give it all charity? Or perhaps she could pay it all in taxes to fund more council jobs, MPs gold plated pensions and single parents need cash to fund all their children to different fathers.

Well done Katie! It still doesn't come close to the amount of pain you had to suppress whilst giving birth. No wonder Tom's other wives waited until after the divorce to get pregnant!

I totally agree with the last 2 comments. This is an obscene amount of money. A gym for Suri?? Why on earth does a toddler need a gym? I have children and they have a play room. This clearly demostrates how overpaid actors, actresses, footballers etc are. Today it is reported thoughout 2009 every 57 seconds someone in the UK would have lost their job. Just think how many people will lose their homes while Ms Holmes continues to spend money at an unprecedented rate. Maybe all the homeless people can move into her New York apartment while she stays at her LA home.

I think it's great that she is helping the troubled economy. Just think how many jobs are kept because of millionaire spending. Moreover, as everyone says, this is the time to scoop up depressed real estate, if you have the cash--and she does, god bless her.

Anyone married to that crazed little guy would have to find an outlet...like the other Hollywood sagas they'll end up divorced and 20 years from now no one will give a damn what they do so she might as well have her day in the sun. Suri can have her gym but you know the score:she'll probably be in rehab in 10 years...it's all so predictable.

Who cares if she spends $10 or $10,000! She has the money to do it, so why not! What would everyone say if people who had money didn't spend it! I say SPEND SPEND SPEND Kate!

Wow, to have all that money and it is their money after all. Just wished they would open their eyes to see that so many people are starving and needing shelters. How many useful buildings can be had if one celebrity bought a building for use to house the hungry and to shelter the poor! In any case, it is sad that it is written up in the tabloids. It is rather sad that material things mean more to some people than a helping hand. I'd say the heart has gone on the way side!

People its her money, she worked hard for it. Why do she have to stop living because the government put the country in termoil.
Comment by peace on January 05 20:03

Oh! Come on, if you had 20 million to do as you please. I'm sure we would be saying the same thing about you. Go Katie, shop til your heart is content!!!!!!!

ditto!!!!!!!! What more can you say about these crazy actors!!!!
Comment by cathy on January 05 23:00

It just goes to show that these people could careless what is going on around them. Why on earth does a toddler need a gym? In my opinion it is a lazy way out of parenting as I'm sure ole Kate does not take the time to play with her daughter in that expensive gym. Hey Kate in case you have not figured it out yet, your daughter does not care how much you spend on her clothes, toys, or homes all she cares about is spending time with her parents! Do you even know how many children you could feed with just the cost of that gym?
Comment by Rebecca on January 05 23:59

i have absolutely no problem with anyone spending the money they have earned however they see fit.

and who is to say that any of this is even true.
Comment by Goody on January 06 06:34

Usually I make no comments on these issues becasue to me they are very pointless to fuse about because what we say about the issue isn't going to make any difference's for the parties involved but i have to say that it sounds to me like the girl has an addiction!!! She has nothing better to do? I know that when I get "extra" money i love to shop! she just has a lot more "extra" then the average person. I think she has a problem, but who are we to tell her how to fix it. There is nothing we can do? I just hope she realizes that what she is doing is making people in times like these sit up and take notice!!!!! This could mean positive or negative responses!!!!
