Tom: I bought engagement ring after first date

Tom Cruise has admitted that he knew Katie Holmes was the one the moment he was introduced to the actress.

'I knew I wanted to marry Kate when I met her,' confesses the star in the latest issue of The New York Times Style magazine, in which Tom and Katie appear on split covers for the publication's 'Holiday/Reinvention' issue.

Photographed in black and white and harking back to the 40s Hollywood glamour era, Katie is shot with her head angled upwards and pin curls framing her face.

In a candid revelation, hubby Tom owned up to buying his now wife of two years an engagement ring just after their first date in 2005.

Katie had confessed to him that she dreamed of marrying him as a little girl and Cruise tells the magazine: 'I said I wouldn't want to disappoint her.'

It seems it may well have been a race to get down on one knee for the pair, as the actor reveals: 'At one point, I thought she was going to ask me to marry her first and I put her off by changing the subject. I wanted to ask her,' says Cruise.

In a separate interview for the edition in which Katie appears on the cover, the 29-year-old is equally gushing in her fondness for Mr Cruise saying she was also 'completely in love' after their first date. 'He was so warm, and I thought 'Wow, you can be a superstar and a human being.'

The actress, who recently made her debut on Broadway in Arthur Miller's All My Sons, also saw the press time as an opportunity to dispel the rumours that in reality she is a puppet on Tom's strings.

'There's a misperception about me that I just became this wallflower, this woman who doesn't have any control of her life,' says Katie.

'And that's pretty wrong. From the very beginning, I've made choices in my life that have been very strong.'

The ex-Dawson Creek star says family time takes priority in her life now and she has no concerns that Tom is often in the spotlight more. 'I'm a mom and an actress with a play to do every night. I can't pay attention to all that noise.'
