Ricky Gervais reveals Jonathan Ross devastated by Sachs scandal

Marie Claire celebrity news: Ricky Gervais and Jonathan Ross Rex Features

Ricky Gervais has revealed that Jonathan Ross was devastated by his role in the Andrew Sachs phone call fiasco.

The Office star said that Ross admitted he was 'in the wrong,' following the radio prank, which saw him and Russell Brand leave lewd messages on Andrew Sachs' voicemail.

Gervais also told how the BBC presenter hit a real low after being forced to take a 12-week suspension which lost him £1.5 million in pay.

'They made a mistake because they picked on a real person and they left the message on a human being's answerphone,' Gervais told The Sun.

'They could have sworn a hundred times and said some other ridiculous things and that would have been OK. But it was about a human being.'

'The sex and the baying for blood and all that. It was wrong. But they do know that now. Jonathan has apologised. He knew he made a mistake – but he didn't kill anyone.'

The Extras actor believes his pal will bounce back once he is reinstated at the BBC on 24 January.

'It’s all about timing. I’m sure he’ll get over it. He’s a strong character.'

Meanwhile, Russell Brand, who resigned after the controversial joke, is currently in Hawaii filming the movie adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest.
