The Spirit Awards might not be as famous as the Academy Awards, but, in Hollywood circles, its certainly far cooler and, yesterday, its 2009 shortlist was unveiled, paving the way for the Oscar and Golden Globe shortlists which are just around the corner.

Designed to honour independent films and their makers, the awards show - now in its 23rd year - famously takes place in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, California.
