The Inaugural Ball that will initiate Barack Obama as America's new President is to be hosted by MTV.

With his cool credentials already sky high, what with celebrity backing from the likes of George Clooney and Scarlett Johansson, the President-elect will be supported by the TV network who wish to celebrate his campaign's success in encouraging youth voters to cast their vote.

The 'Be the Change Inaugural Ball' will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Centre in Washington on 20 January and be broadcast not only on the numerous network channels, but also live online at MTV.com.

It promises to be a starry night with performances from 'leading artists' and appearances from 'celebrities and government officials'.

Now speculation is rife over who will sign up to the coolest gig of 2009, but American's President-elect has admitted to a penchant for Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z, who are all played regularly on Obama's iPod.

The elections in November saw a record 24 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 vote – 18% of the 133.3 million voters who turned out in their droves to cast their vote.

In recognition of the backing from younger Americans, hundreds of young people will be picked to join the party, based on the time their gave over to volunteering during the Democratic election campaign.

But if you don’t get the call for the official party, there will be plenty more to choose from as organisations across Washington have announced plans to hold inaugural balls of their own, all to welcome President Barack Obama to the White House.
