Hosted by US comedian Jimmy Kimmel, the glittering awards do lit up downtown Los Angeles on Saturday night and drew in a younger musician crowd than ever before.

Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift and Rihanna all made an appearance at the awards do, but it was veteran Christina Aguilera who showed them how it's done, opening the show with a medley of her hits.

Mariah Carey belted her new single I Stay in Love, while legendary songwriter Annie Lennox was bestowed with the Award of Merit by surprise guest Justin Timberlake.

Soul diva Alicia Keyes clinched two awards for her latest album As I Am, for both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. Keys let out a loud 'Woooooo' as she received the gongs and dedicated her victory 'to all the super women who struggle every day to make it through.'
