Madonna and Guy Ritchie have been granted a divorce in the High Court this morning.

The pop icon and the British film director have now legally split after eight years of marriage, reports the BBC.

The pair did not appear at the Registry of the Family division in London today to hear their decree nisi read out.

Madonna and Guy reportedly agreed a divorce settlement earlier this week. Guy will not receive any of Madonna's £300m fortune, but they will share custody of their two sons.

Their case was listed before District Judge Reid alongside 16 others 'for pronouncement of decree or order under the special procedure rule'.

The couple were registered for the divorce hearing under the names Ciccione M and Ritchie GS.

If neither Madonna or Guy dispute the terms of the divorce, the decree nisi could become a decree absolute in a few weeks, formally ending the couple's eight-year marriage.

Madonna, 50, and Guy, 40, are believed to have settled the terms of their divorce amicably.

While Guy, worth £20m in his own right, was entitled to half Madonna's money, he has reportedly refused any cash but insisted on joint custody of Rocco, 8, and adopted David, 3.

Madonna has a daughter, Lourdes, 12, from a previous relationship.

The boys will now split their time between Guy in London and Madonna in New York.

Madonna is on the North American leg of her Sticky and Sweet world tour, while Guy is filming blockbuster Sherlock Holmes, starring Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr.
