Wildfires 'like Armageddon' says Rob Lowe

The wildfires raging in southern California have forced thousands to flee their homes, including actor Rob Lowe.

More than 800 homes have been destroyed, 22,000 acres of land surrounding Los Angeles have been scorched and 50,000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes.

Rob, 44, said he was watching TV at home when his wife Sheryl told him about the encroaching fires.

'My son and I were watching the football game, and my wife, who was out running errands, called and said, "Get out. The mountain's on fire". I thought she was kidding. There was no indication that anything was going wrong, that anything was up.'

The Brothers & Sisters star told a local radio station that he soon realised their lives could be in danger.

'I put the kids in the car, turned out of the driveway and the entire mountain was on fire with flames shooting 200 feet in the air. It was just like Armageddon. There was literally no warning. It came out of nowhere,' he said.

Luckily Rob's house in the exclusive Montecito community, where Michael Douglas and Oprah Winfrey also have homes, escaped the blaze.

A state of emergency still remains in four counties but the BBC reports that fire crews have managed to contain the blazes.

After visiting Los Angeles, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said it had been 'a very tough few days'.
