Kate on road to Oscar

Kate Winslet is tipped for success at the Oscars next year, as two of her latest films are being considered for coveted Academy awards.

The film Revolutionary Road, starring Kate and her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, is in line for a Best Picture Oscar.

Directed by Kate's husband Sam Mendes, the film is about a young American couple in the mid-1950s who struggle to make their marriage work, while both being disappointed with their careers and the paths their lives have taken.

Kate is also rumoured to scoop the Best Supporting Actress gong for her role in The Reader, directed by Stephen Daldry.

The Reader is set in Germany in the aftermath of WWII. Kate plays an older woman who is defending herself in a war crimes trial.

A young law student she seduced nearly 10 years previously is reunited with his former lover and has questions about her past and the end of their affair.

The 80th Annual Academy Awards – the Oscars to the rest of us –  will be held in February next year.

Other films in the running for awards include:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – a bizarre tale starring Brad Pitt as a man born in his 80s who regresses to a baby as he ages.

Milk - starring Sean Penn as San Francisco's first gay politician, Harvey Milk.

Slum Dog Millionaire – the latest offering by Trainspotting director Danny Boyle about a desperately poor Indian teenager who becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
