Michelle Obama style statement
By Lucy Hutchings on Tuesday 11 November 2008
Michelle Obama stepped into the spotlight yesterday, and ensured all eyes were on her, in a scene-stealing red dress.
For a meeting with President George W Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, the First Lady-elect joined her husband, and donned a stunning scarlet Maria Pinto dress for the occasion.
Continuing her run of statement styles, Obama seemed a world apart from the departing First Lady, who chose a neutral brown frock, devoid of detailing.

In contrast, the red dress stood out not only for its colour, but the flattering cut. With an empire line and fitted pencil skirt, this is a style set to emphasise the figure, while the origami pleating at the neckline is a contemporary, and fashion-conscious, touch.
Like her contemporary, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Obama's style looks set to be a breath of fresh fashion air to the Oval Office, not seen since the country's most celebrated style icon, Jackie Kennedy.
Politics has never been so stylish.
