Christina: I wish Britney the best
They were the poster-girls of 90s pop who reportedly engaged in one of the biggest celebrity feuds going, but Christina Aguilera now says she wishes Britney Spears 'all the best'.
Christina and Britney both enjoyed childhood fame on the Disney Channel's Mickey Mouse Club – and both stars went on to release their debut albums within eight months of each other.
Christina - whose debut single, Genie In A Bottle topped the charts in 1999, the year after Britney had her first hit, Baby One More Time - said: 'When we both started releasing records, it was a funny time for me.
'It must have seemed as if we were competing with each other, but, in reality, Britney is someone that I used to hold hands with. We were silly little girls together on the Mickey Mouse Club. What a journey it has been for both of us!'
But, even though they both shared that infamous kiss with Madonna on-stage at an MTV Awards, a feud reportedly erupted in 2003 when Christina embarked on the Justified And Stripped Tour with Britney's ex-boyfriend (and fellow former Mousketeer) Justin Timberlake.
It was said that Spears turned up at Hollywood hotspot Joseph's one night when she heard that Justin was going to be there. Desperate for a reconciliation, she marched over to the VIP area - and found her ex-boyfriend and Christina in an embrace.
Justin and Christina brushed it off as an innocent kiss between old friends, but Spears wasn't buying it.
The feud continued, apparently, when Christina was recording an album, and discovered that one of the songs on it had been written by Britney, using the pseudonym, Aurora Lynne. She swiftly deleted the track.
Christina later wrote to Britney hoping to set the record straight, and she told an interviewer at the time that 'I never even got a reply'.
So are they friends now? Christina told the Daily Mail: 'There have been so many stories about the two of us not getting on.
'We don't keep closely in touch with one another, and it's obvious how our lives have taken on two different directions.'
But, she says, she has no opinion on Britney's recent troubles, adding: 'I don't pass any judgment on what she does.
'I always wish her all the best.'
