Marie Claire Celebrity News: Pink

It was definitely ladies' – and America's – night at the MTV Europe Music Awards yesterday, with Pink, Britney Spears and Katy Perry sweeping the boards.

Pink won the first prize of the evening, picking up Most Addictive Track for So What, which was presented to her by the Sugababes.

Britney Spears continued her comeback and bagged two awards – Album of the Year for Blackout and Best Act of 2008.

Host Katy Perry won Best New Act, and wowed the crowds with her opening performance of I Kissed a Girl, where she appeared on stage dressed as an American footballer riding a giant cherry chapstick, out of which exploded a shower of glitter.

Perry went on to make 12 costume changes throughout the show, including a yellow dress featuring a picture of President-elect Barack Obama.

Meanwhile, Britain's hottest talent, Leona Lewis, missed out on three gongs, while fellow Brits Duffy, Amy Winehouse and Coldplay also left empty-handed from the bash, which was sponsored by edc by Esprit.

Sir Paul McCartney was Britain's saving grace, however, and was honoured with Ultimate Legend Award, which was given to him by Bono.

The U2 frontman said he was there to present the 'first, last and only MTV Ultimate Award'.

He said: 'In the universe of rock and roll, the Beatles were the Big Bang.

'There is one person here tonight whose work is immortal. There is only one Paul McCartney.'

Sir Paul gave special mention to his family, saying: 'I want to thank my mum and dad, Jim and Mary. I also want to thank my brother Mike who is here tonight.'

The most unexpected winner of the night was 80s pop star Rick Astley, who took home the Best Act Ever award after a public vote.

Stars who took to the stage to perform, meanwhile, included Beyonce, Kanye West and Estelle, Duffy, The Killers, and Kid Rock.
