Nicole Kidman has admitted that during her marriage to Tom Cruise she felt she should be 'seen and not heard,' as she lived in the shadow of her superstar husband.

Speaking to a US magazine, Kidman has opened up on her troubled marriage to Cruise, which ended in 2001

'I felt I became a star only by association. I didn't think (my early movies) were very good, which is why I would always cower in the background,' the Golden Compass actress revealed.

'I thought, I don't deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars and I would think, I'm here to support him. I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard,' she added.

Since the couple split, Kidman has found huge success professionally, winning an Oscar in 2003 for The Hours, and starring in a string of hit movies.

She married country music star Keith Urban in 2006, and gave birth to her first biological child, a daughter, Sunday Rose, in July.

Describing the birth she divulged, 'Keith was my rock during chidbirth. I'd heard horror stories of 40 hours of labour, and I was sure that would be me, but I had a very easy labour.'

It hasn't been an easy start though for Kidman's second marriage, and she admitted that Urban's admission to rehab for alcohol addiction, just four months after their wedding, tested their relationship.

'It brought us to our knees,' she described, 'Addiction is very prevalent in our society, and it can be shattering to both people in the relationship.'
