Marie Claire News: Oprah Winfrey

Barack Obama's list of celebrity supporters could probably stretch around the globe twice, what with endorsement from George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey and Kanye West, to name but a few.

And Team Obama were out in their droves at polling stations and election night parties across America, hoping to see history made with the election of the first black President to the White House.

Following the news that Barack Obama had won the presidency in a landslide victory, one of his biggest fans, chat show queen Oprah Winfrey declared she was simply 'vibrating'. Listening to the newly-elected President's speech in Grant Park, Chicago, Oprah was asked how she planned to celebrate: 'Just to be fully present. I'm just trying to take it all in. I can't even talk about it.'

'This has been the greatest experience of my lifetime,' she told reporters. 'I haven't seen a sense of unity like this since 9/11. Now we’re all brought together in the name of hope.'

George Clooney
added his own praise, following Obama's win, saying: 'I congratulate President-elect Obama on his historic victory, and now it's time to begin unifying the country so we can take on the extraordinary challenges that this generation faces.'

Music mogul P Diddy clearly felt the power was at his fingertips when he announced: 'I felt like my vote was the vote that put him into office… And that may not be true but that's how much power it felt like I had.'

Actor Ethan Hawke added his own emotional response saying: 'I'm so excited right now. I got up at 7:20 this morning, and I voted for Barack. I haven't had this much optimism in a long time. Tonight is historic!'

Singer Usher was overcome with joy at Obama's victory saying: 'This will go down in history, in black history, for all of the sacrifices that the great Joseph Lowery and Martin Luther King made, this actually pays off for their sacrifice. ... I'm speechless. I don't even know what to say.'

Words cannot express my joy that at last.... we are now recognising that we are people first and that colour should not come into it. I have cried buckets of joy for the hope that it brings.

The fact that the majority of Americans responded to, recognised and accepted that Obama's vision and policies, are what matters and not the colour of his skin is starting to restore my hope and faith in humanity.

Black people, like any other human being, feels pain, joy, etc. We have both educated and illiterates amongst us and our contributions, historic and present, should also be acknowledged and not derided as has always been the case.

Obamas' victory is not just for black people but for all fair-minded human beings. This is the begining of a new dawn, borne of hope of greater things to come and a better life for us all.

I am now hopeful that there will be a black or ethnic minority Prime Minister in the UK in my lifetime.

Although I live in London am I am not American, I still felt an overwhelming sense of joy when America decided that they wanted change, and this change became evident when they came together and voted in their first black President!
