Is this man the new Dr Who?

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Paterson Joseph

After David Tennant's announcement at the National Television Awards last night that he will step down as the legendary Doctor Who next year, speculation is already rife about his replacement.

A number of names have been thrown into the ring, including Irish actor and Cold Feet star James Nesbitt. However, bookies are tipping Paterson Joseph as the frontrunner for the esteemed role, offering odds of 3-1 on him to become the first black doctor of the series.

The 44-year-old actor who you may recognise from Casualty fame, but has also had his taste of Hollywood fame, starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach, has already appeared in two previous episodes of the hit BBC series.

Professionally-trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Joseph faces stiff competition from two further potential doctors – Life on Mars star John Simm and State of Play actor David Morrisey – who bookies have given odds of 8-1 and 5-1 respectively.

Doctor Who's diehard fan base has whipped up a frenzy of speculation over who will be next to step into the Tardis and one rather dark horse, who bookmakers have ignored, goes by the name of Rhys Ifans…well, he'd certainly be on familiar turf with filming of the series taking place in home town, Cardiff…
