Joaquin Phoenix quits acting

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Joaquin Phoenix

He blew audiences away with his portrayal of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, but actor Joaquin Phoenix has sensationally stated that he’s quitting movies  at the tender age of 34.

The award-winning younger brother of River Phoenix, who died from a drug overdose in 1993, told Extra that he’s decided to quit Hollywood, saying: ‘I want to take this opportunity...to give you the exclusive ... that this will be my last performance as an actor. I'm not doing films anymore.’

Questioned further by Extra’s reporter Jerry Penacoli, who asked: “Are you serious?” he said: ‘Yeah. I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that.’

Still unsure, Jerry turned to Casey Affleck, who was standing next to him, and asked: ‘I take it that he's kidding?’ Affleck responded: ‘I don't think he's kidding. He's got music and stuff.’

If Joaquin – who was nominated for an Oscar for his roles in Walk the Line and Gladiator - does stick to his word, it will be a big loss to the acting industry, not to mention the female filmgoer.

The last film he’s referring to is Two Lovers - in which he shares screen space with Gwyneth Paltrow – a Brooklyn-set romantic drama about a man who is torn between a family friend his parents want him to marry, and his beautiful but off-limits neighbour.

It's a real shame, and I hope he doesn't get bored then come back, as many others have done, because then these 'final announcements' actually mean nothing.

I like his acting though, so yep a shame!
