Hathaway ex sentenced to jail
Anne Hathaway's ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, has been sentenced to 4.5 years in jail for fraud.
Raffaello pleaded guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy in a Manhattan federal court.
The 30-year-old is likely to be imprisoned at Otisville in NY or Fort Dix, at the request of his attorney, Flora Edwards.
Italian-born Raffaello dated Anne Hathaway for four years before their split in June just before his arrest. Raffaello was accused of lying to investors by claiming to be the CFO of the Vatican, and using swindled funds for a trip to the Dominican Republic with his 'then girlfriend' (Anne Hathaway).
According to the complaint, Follieri also used the funds for his $37,000-a-month apartment rent, and medical bills for him and his 'then girlfriend'.
Upon sentencing, Raffaello admitted that he'd made mistakes, saying: 'What I did was wrong and there is no point in making excuses.
I will never be able to wash away the shame.
I just hope that someday those who have been hurt by my actions will forgive me.'
His attorney added that he started with good intentions, but 'sunk and sunk into a quagmire of his own making'.
Meanwhile, Anne poked fun at the incidents earlier this month on Saturday Night Live. She joked: 'I broke up with my boyfriend, and two weeks later he was sent to prison for fraud. I mean, we've all been there, right, ladies?'
Its good she can see the funny side, but we doubt Raffaello is laughing now
