Estelle star of Mobos
By Ruth Doherty on Thursday 16 October 2008
It was the 13th annual Music of Black Origin (Mobo) Awards last night, and sassy singer Estelle emerged as the big winner picking up two gongs.
The Hammersmith-born star beat Duffy and Leona Lewis to win the Best UK Female award, and took home Best Song for American Boy.

Afterwards, the star said she was determined to make British music more successful in the States by working with big-name artists like Mary J. Blige. She told the Metro: 'We don't give ourselves enough credit over here. They come over here every year and steal our music and re-do it. This year, we've been leading the field when American Boy came out.
'I'd love to do something with Mary, I really would. I want to work with talent from London as well. We have very big stars over here. We just have to find out a way to expose them.'
But the biggest question on everyone's lips was: what on earth was Mel B wearing? The singer - and host of the event - seemed to be channelling 80s star Grace Jones chic in a bizarre hood, which she later took off to reveal a pretty, satin strapless dress.
Meanwhile, chart-topper Leona Lewis bagged Best Video for her hit Bleeding Love, and Best Album for Spirit. Guests at the bash, held at Wembley arena, included Jamelia, Alesha Dixon and the Sugababes, who took to the stage with Lifetime Achievement Award winner Mary Wilson of the Supremes, to sing one of their classic songs, Stop! In the Name of Love.
