Madonna confirms divorce

Madonna and Guy Ritchie have confirmed that they have ended their marriage, and are set to divorce.

Ending months of speculation, the singer's publicist Liz Rosenberg today released a statement, stating that the couple are to end their almost eight year marriage.

The joint statement read, 'Madonna and Guy Ritchie have agreed to divorce after seven-and-a-half years of marriage.

'They have both requested that the media maintain respect for their family at this difficult time.'

Speculation of a split have been circulating for months, and reached fever pitch this summer when the US media reported that Madonna was conducting an affair with New York Yankees baseball player Alex Rodriguez. She denied the relationship, but rumours continued to dog the couple.

Madonna is currently touring the world with her Sticky & Sweet tour, while Ritchie is filming his new movie, Sherlock Holmes in London.

The director is now expected to leave the couple's Marylebone home, and move into their country pad in Wiltshire.

Both are yet to comment on the separation.

Who cares? Why do celebrities feel the need to make 'official' announcements. If they are going to do something, why not just do it. why all the hoo-ha?
