Golden girl Kate statue unveiled
A life-sized solid gold statue of supermodel Kate Moss, with her legs tucked behind her head, was unveiled at the British Museum today.
The 50kg 18-carat gold statue is called ‘Siren’ and represents the fashion icon as a ‘modern day Aphrodite’.
The figure, worth £1.5m, will sit alongside other statues of famous Greek beauties as part of the museum’s Statuephilia exhibition.
Artist Marc Quinn said the statue was created to show the difference between public images and the images we have of ourselves.
He told The Telegraph that the model had posed for him – although not in the same position as the statue – and understood the message behind the figure.
‘I think she very much loved it because she understands the difference between her image and her self,’ he said.
‘The sculpture is really about whether we make images or they make us. It's about trying to live up to impossible dreams and immortality.’
Quinn’s other famous work includes Alison Lapper Pregnant, which now sits on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.
Other statues in the exhibition include pieces by Damien Hirst and Antony Gormley. They will all be displayed within different galleries in the museum alongside items from its permanent collection.
