Springsteen and Joel to play Obama fundraiser

Marie Claire World News: Bruce Springsteen

Rockers Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel are set to perform on stage together in a Barack Obama fundraiser to give the Democratic election campaign a financial boost.

The pair will publicly pledge their allegiance to the Obama cause in a concert on 16 October in New York, the day after the third and final debate between the Democratic nominee and his Republican opponent John McCain.

With a back catalogue that's the envy of any musician, Springsteen is bound to deliver classics from Born in the USA and Human Touch to We Shall Overcome. While Billy Joel's equally impressive playlist is bound to include We Didn't Start The Fire.

Springsteen is one of a long line of celebrities who have lent their support to Barack Obama's campaign. Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Robert De Niro and George Clooney have all proclaimed their backing for the potential US president.

Springsteen, also known as the Boss, said Senator Obama has 'the depth, the reflectiveness and the resilience' to be the next US president.

He added: 'He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years.

'After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken.'

Tickets for the Springsteen and Joel gig, which will also see other performers take to the stage, cost between $500 and $10,000.

Joel is widely known as a long-term supporter of the Democratic party. He supported Bill Clinton in his bid for the White House, Hillary Clinton for Senate and now Obama for president.
