Tim Burton does Alice in Wonderland

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Tim Burton

A Hollywood version of Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland has begun filming in Cornwall.

Tim Burton, the US director behind modern fairy tales including Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish and Sleepy Hollow, is adapting the much-loved Lewis Carroll tale for the big screen.

The classic characters will be played by a host of stars, with Johnny Depp taking a turn as the Mad Hatter and Matt Lucas and David Walliams cast as Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee.

Newcomer Mia Wasikowska, an 18-year-old from Canberra, Australia, will play the title role.

The film, titled Alice in Wonderland, will be a mixture of live action and computer-generated effects. It is due for release in spring 2010.

The Mad Hatter is one of several roles that will keep Depp busy this year.

The actor is reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean instalment and, it was revealed yesterday, is to play Tonto in a Disney film version of The Lone Ranger.
