JK Rowling huge Labour donation
JK Rowling has made a very public show of support for the Labour party by donating £1 million.
The Harry Potter author, now dubbed the Minister For Magic, has reportedly made the contribution in response to her frustration at David Cameron's plans to give tax breaks to married couples.
After weeks of having little to smile about, Rowling's generous endowment should come as a welcome relief to Gordon Brown, whose party is reportedly hindered by £17.8 million worth of debts.
The multi-millionaire writer, whose fortune is estimated at £560 million and is a friend of the Prime Minister and his wife, Sarah, explained her decision in a statement saying: 'I believe that poor and vulnerable families will fare much better under the Labour Party than they would under a Cameron-led Conservative party.'
She added: 'Gordon Brown has consistently prioritised and introduced measures that will save as many children as possible from a life lacking in opportunity or choice.'
Rowling made a pertinent reference about her own set-up as a single parent explaining: 'David Cameron's promise of tax perks for the married, on the other hand, is reminiscent of the Conservative government I experienced as a lone parent.
'It sends the message that the Conservatives still believe a childless, dual-income, but married couple is more deserving of a financial pat on the head than those struggling, as I once was, to keep their families afloat in difficult times.'
Mr Brown was clearly delighted by the large sum and effused as he accepted the donation: 'I am delighted that JK Rowling, who is one of the world's greatest ever authors, has made such a generous donation. I thank her for supporting the Labour Party and our values of social justice and opportunity for all.'
It is the first time Rowling has donated to the party but despite the author's new nickname as Minister for Magic and Spells, her likelihood of joining the Labour party still looks slim; William Hill placed her odds at 10,000/1…

Surely she could have found a charity or two, infinitely more worthy of that sort of cash injection, instead of giving it to a lot of sharks and boneheads aka a political party. Good God.

I would have thought that she also gives to charity as well! At the end of the day it's her money to do with as she wishes. She obviously feels very strongly about supporting the Labour party.

One wonders if the donation will get her a place in the next round of knighthoods!! Whatever was she thinking to donate to a political party instead of some worthy medical research cause like childrens cancer, breast cancer, or indeed women's refuge. At least those organisations would use the money properly and to good cause. Politics and politicians? I think not.
