How to get into ...

Nicole Kidman most overpaid actress

Nicole Kidman speaks at a Unifem press conference at the United Nations in New York City

As an Oscar winner and member of the Hollywood elite, Nicole Kidman is well used to receiving awards.

But the 41-year-old actress may be less than pleased with her latest accolade: that of being Tinseltown's most overpaid actress.

A string of recent box office flops has sent the Australian to the top of Forbes magazine's list of bad value stars.

According to the magazine, Kidman made just £1 in profit for every £1 she was paid.

In 2007 she was rated third on the list, but films including The Invasion and Margot At The Wedding, which did less well than expected, saw her jumping to number one.

Her most heavily publicised film, the fantasy adventure The Golden Compass, was made on a budget of £115 million but grossed only £15 million during its first week of release, the Daily Mail reported.

Researchers at Forbes examined worldwide box-office returns for each of the stars' last three films and DVD sales.

Forbes said: 'Despite winning an Oscar for her performance in 2002's The Hours, Kidman has become the most overpaid celebrity in Hollywood.'

Actress Jennifer Garner and Kidman's former husband, Tom Cruise, were also high on the overpaid list.

I don't think they take into account the fact that films like the Invasion, which has a history of interference from the studios, and the Golden Compass were box office flops less because of the actors involved and more to do with the films being bad in spite of the actors. The Golden Compass did well outside of the US, but New Line had sold the rights outside of the US, where it performed badly. No amount of great acting is going to save a poorly written, directed or produced film. I'm looking forward to Baz Luhrmann's "Australia".

erm, I think the Golden Compass was very badly promoted. I loved it and I like Nicole, she is down to earth and not at the opening of every envelope unlike some - I did not mention the present Mrs. Cruise at all, or say that she IS a mediocre actress who certainly DID benefit from marriage to the nutso one, at all. Did I?
