John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston may have kept quiet about their relationship while they were in it – but the singer is certainly opening up now it's over.

Mayer had nothing but praise for his ex when OK! magazine caught up with him as he left a gym in New York's SoHo neighbourhood.

'There's no lying, there's no cheating, there's no nothing,' he said, adding: 'Jennifer Aniston is the smartest, most sophisticated person I think I have ever met.

'She's one of the most lovely people I've ever met in my life.'

Asked about what went wrong, he told reporters: 'People are different, people have a different chemistry. I ended a relationship to be alone, because I don't want to waste somebody's time if something's not right.'

The pair's whirlwind romance began in April and they split earlier this week. Since the break-up, they have settled into their separate lives on different sides of the country.

poor thing! I really admire Jennifer Aniston and i am a big fan of hers...i just wish i could give her a hug and that she can be happy..She is such a smart and talented person, i think she should be an inspiration to everyone! Love you Jen! MWAA!!!

Jen must feel so silly after trying on wedding dresses! She's not having good luck in the romance dept what you not telling us Jen? she never made it as big time actress and she always seems to be piped at the post time to step it up or give up! She's in an industry where there is no sympathy for losers.
