Madonna to adopt girl from Malawi

Madonna and Guy Ritchie

Madonna's bid to adopt a second child from Malawi looks like it will be successful.

With her 50th birthday looming, the mother-of-three is renewing efforts to adopt the little girl she fell in love with on a previous visit to the country, despite resistance from two-year-old Mercy James' family.

Malawian adoption minister Penstone Kilembe tells The Sun: 'Madonna's representatives have been visiting the girl. The adoption is now advanced - all the government is waiting for is Madonna to forward the petition of adoption formalities. Then Mercy will be able to leave the country for a new life.'

The girl's mother died after giving birth to Mercy and she has been living in an orphanage ever since, however, other members of her family, including her uncle, have so far blocked Madonna's efforts to adopt her.

Yesterday, Mercy's grandmother told reporters: 'When Mercy is no longer a baby we want her back. I do not want the money they said they'd give me.'

The strain of the second adoption has been seen by many as the root behind Madonna and husband Guy's recent alleged marriage problems.

A friend claims: 'The adoption process in Malawi is so long and stressful that all the legal wrangling put a huge strain on their marriage.

'They dropped proceedings to pour all their energies into each other. But Madonna now feels they are stable enough to press ahead with the adoption again.'

While I admire any one who is willing to give a child in poverty a loving and stable home, these 'celebrity adoptions' seem wrong. Basically, they are telling the world' I have money, I can do what I like'. What about the child's family? Don't they have any say, or does money say it all?
