Minnie Driver prepares for birth

By Ruth Doherty  on Tuesday 12 August 2008

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Minnie Driver

Brit actress Minnie Driver is preparing to give birth any day now – but has admitted she's unsure if she'll still be involved in a relationship with the baby's father.

The 38-year-old star is yet to reveal the identity of her baby's dad, and has denied reports that it is Californian musician Craig Zolezzi. But, whoever the father is, Minnie has admitted she's not sure if he'll have a role in their child's life.

‘I’m not married and I don’t know if I’ll stay with the guy,' she told the New York Post.

'It’s great to be an independent creature. Today you don’t need a man any more. In the old days, if you had a baby without marriage, people would put you out. I’m very into feeling this female thing.'

So who will hold her hand at the birth? 'My mum and aunt Serena will be with me, as will my best friends, a midwife and a yoga teacher. And I’ll be the wailing monster at the centre,’ she said.

Minnie may not 'need' a man, but children need fathers. How selfish she is not to even consider that kids need their daddies. I'm 34 weeks pregnant and would hate to feel I was going this alone and I know my kids would be distraught without their dad. Boo hiss, Minnie.

I know plenty of people without father's. The one thing they all seem to say is that it would be weird after all these years to call someone "dad".
If the child never knew the father then how can he/she know what is missing?

So it hasn't occurred to you that in her hormonal state she might just be trying to avoid any further speculation and keep the father private? Her comments may have been taken out of context anyway - give the poor woman a break!

Minnie is up for being independent. But what about her child's independence as they grow up, missing out not knowing their father?

With women's attitudes like Minnie, no wonder the world is in such a state today. So Minnie doesn't need a man around, selfish thoughts indeed, but has she stopped to consider the baby's needs? I know of so many toddlers out of control, even with their dads around, because young parents today haven't got the time to discipline them. They may be working all hours to provide nursery places for them and comfort living, but in the evening and weekends parents are too chilled out to care to talk to their children! And kids want to be like their friends, they like to visit friends who have both parents, they don't want to stick out - my dad was in the Navy and always away when I was a kid, and I missed him like mad! It was always so lovely to have him home for short periods, it stopped my eldest brother taking over his role for a while.

The previous comment has insensed me. Of course your kids would miss their dad, they have known him in their lives. But being raised by a single parent doesn't mean you become less of a person or miss out on anything, for a start you know no different. My mum was widowed at 29 and did a fantastic job raising me on her own. I've been very successful academically, in sport and now in business and while I'd love my dad to be alive I've never felt I have missed out on anything. Let Minnie choose her own path.

Children don't need fathers who don't want to be fathers.....you have no idea the reasons behind Minnie's comments so its better to keep your opinions to yourself. You have got to love do-gooders that poke their noses in and voice their opinions when they have no idea of the reasons behind someones decision to go it alone - butt out and worry about your own family! Boo hiss toroisepetal, is what I say!

So does the father get a say in this? Maybe he wants to be in the child's life. Do women like Minnie deserve to have a child? That's my question!
