Obama and McCain seek Angelina support

Angelina Jolie for St. John

In a presidential election campaign, celebrity endorsements are big business and Barack Obama has managed to secure backing from the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Robert DeNiro and Sharon Stone.

However, both the Democrat candidate and Republican candidate, John McCain, are still after one more vital celebrity supporter: the all-important Angelina Jolie.

To date, Angelina has remained firmly on the fence, despite both campaigns reaching out to court her support.

The actress is still undecided however, according to a statement from political advisor Trevor Neilson, to Variety magazine.

'I have not decided on a candidate,' says Angelina, 'I am waiting to see the commitments they will make on issues like international justice, refugees and how to address the needs of children in crisis around the world.'

Angelina is known for her far-reaching humanitarian work across the world and is the goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Earlier this year when the actress made a trip to Iraq, she wrote in the Washington Post, urging the US to stay in the region and step up its financial and material aid, rather than withdraw from the country.

Some bloggers in America have speculated that Angelina could in fact endorse McCain over Obama, but the actress has left things wide open 'calling on each of the presidential candidates and congressional leaders to announce a comprehensive refugee plan with a specific timeline and budget as part of their Iraq strategy'.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly magazine in June, Angelina commented: 'I think people assume I'm a Democrat. But I'm registered independent and I'm still undecided. So I'm looking at McCain as well as Obama.'
