Morgan Freeman in car crash
By Ruth Doherty on Tuesday 5 August 2008
Veteran actor Morgan Freeman is being treated in hospital after suffering injuries in a serious car crash.
The 71-year-old star, currently appearing in new Batman movie The Dark Knight, was reported to have been involved in a late-night car accident in Mississipi.
Freeman was driving in Tallahatchie County when the accident happened at about 11.30 pm, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol. He was removed from the wreck using the Jaws of Life (a rescue tool), then airlifted from the accident scene to the Regional Medical Centre at Memphis.
His rep, Donna Lee, says he's broken a couple of bones, but is in good spirits. She said: 'He has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage but he is in good spirits.
'He is going to have surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to correct the damage. He says he'll be okay and is looking forward to a full recovery.'
Morgan enjoyed his childhood in Mississippi and recently bought a bar there. He was driving his friend, Demaris Meyer, home after an evening out, but it is not thought he was under the influence of any drink or drugs.
Instead, Sgt Ben Williams, who was on the scene, claimed Freeman may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He said: 'The vehicle went off the edge of the road and flipped several times.
'There's no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved.'

I am glad that the injuries are not severe, and hope that he recovers quickly.
