Cheryl Cole has been confirmed as the woman to take over Sharon Osbourne's place on the X Factor judging panel.

The Girls Aloud singer joins Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Dannii Minogue, who start filming the fifth series of the hit reality show this week.

No stranger to the format (Girls Aloud being the spawn of Pop Stars: The Rivals, if you can remember that far back), Cheryl pipped Mel B to the coveted X Factor spot, with both hotly tipped in the run-up to today's announcement.

'I'm so excited to be part of such a great show and although it's scary joining a huge programme like The X Factor, it's a massive honour to be following in the footsteps of Sharon Osbourne,' says Cheryl.

'The rest of the girls have said they're right behind me, which is really important for me as it will be weird to be on the other side of the fence this time. So whilst we get started on the next album, it will be brilliant to be a judge on The X Factor.'

Osbourne herself, who claims to be leaving the show to concentrate on her US TV work, told Radio One yesterday she wanted Cheryl to replace her.

Quite what Dannii, however, will make of her glamorous new co-star remains to be seen.

Can someone please enlighten me as to what talent Cheryl Cole has? I thought Dannii Minogue was scraping the barrel. Oh well, one less viewer for the 'What factor'!!

I'm glad that Sharon Osbourne will not be back, working on the x factor. She never bought anything to the show, apart from arguing.
Have someone in the music industry, will make it a lot better, and having Cheryl is a good choice, as long as Simon keeps his hands to himself.

i am so sad Sharon has gone but then again she was getting sooo old.
i luv Cheryl she has an AMAZING voice and can probably win this year.
i hate Danii its so her fault that sharon left.
