James McAvoy's new role
By Lucy Hutchings on Friday 30 May 2008
James McAvoy's star looks set to rise, with rumours that he will be the lead in the Lords of the Ring's prequel, The Hobbit.
The Scottish actor, who found fame in TV's Shameless, is tipped to take the role of Bilbo Baggins in the eagerly awaited prequel to Peter Jackson's movie trilogy.
A source revealed to The Daily Express, 'A number of names have been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black, but James (McAvoy) is the one the film's bosses really want.'
Sir Ian McKellan will reprise his role of Gandalf, although it is unconfirmed as to whether any other former cast members will return.
The film will be directed by Guillermo del Toro, and is set to start filming in New Zealand this year.

James would be perfect for this role and will perhaps attract an audience that otherwise would pass over another Daniel Radcliff or Jack Black film. James is intelligent, thoughtful, and sexy -- something the others cannot claim.

Del Toro denies these rumours ... Hobbit Movie Director Guillermo del Toro told fans that the current rumours regarding casting for the part of Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming Hobbit movies (previously played by Sir Ian Holm in Lord of The Rings) were false. So at this stage no name has been mentioned as who the Director wants, and the actor possibly wont be named until the scripts are finished.
