Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon has revealed that she is fighting breast cancer.

The actress, who plays lawyer Miranda in the hit US show, was diagnosed with the disease 18 months ago and kept it quiet.

But, during an interview on American TV, she confessed: 'I felt scared.'

She revealed she had even had surgery on a Sunday - so as not to miss a performance of the play she was in at the time, adding: 'That's just how I am.'

Cynthia, who feared she would get cancer like her mother, told how the illness had hit her gay lover Christine Marinoni hardest.

Talking openly about a relationship she had previously refused to discuss, she said: 'My girlfriend was the one doing the eating. She was in a panic - and just trying to calm herself down any way she could.' She also revealed her children, who know about the illness, now call both of them 'Mum', adding 'they love her'.

Recalling when she was told a small tumour had been found after a mammogram, Cynthia said: 'I realised it had been found so early they could get right on it.'

And she said she now admired Sex and the City's handling of Samantha's on-screen fight with the disease, saying: 'It was beautiful.'

'Like, leave it to Samantha to make a party out of cancer.'
