Paris Fashion Week: Day Six

Stella McCartney yesterday dedicated her Paris Fashion Week show to 'Alasdhair, Miller, Bailey, Beckett (the newest addition to the Willis-McCartney brood) and everyone who believes you do not need fur in fashion'. In a season when fur has graced more than its fair share of catwalks, Stella is sticking to her principles.



She is also sticking to the styles - easy-breezy, sexy and stylish, but relaxed and, of course, very, very cool - and shapes she knows best.



For autumn/winter 2008, that means sultry black trousersuits (a key trend all round for next season, in fact), oversized trapeze coats, gently cocooned minis and some beautiful, floaty cotton dresses.



The accessories, too, are as covetable as ever with just-over-the-knee, stacked-heel boots or velvet pumps being key footwear choices, alongside wood veneer belts and clutches (from a sustainable, managed forest, of course).



Stella herself took a bow to the strains of her father's Yesterday. However, this wasn't so much a collection that looked backwards, but rather one that built on previous successes and, in doing so, found a new look for the future that is guaranteed to sell and sell.



Paul's daughter wasn't the only woman looking for positive reviews here in Paris yesterday. Alessandra Facchinetti, the new designer at Valentino, was showing her first collection since taking the reigns from the fashion house's namesake designer, who retired from the catwalk earlier this year.



Expectations were understandably high, but Facchinetti stepped up to the challenge with enviable grace and poise. The collection - a mix of respectful homage with an air of innovative modernism- got high praise from both Marie Claire Editor Marie O'Riordan and Fashion Director Jayne Pickering. Expect to see it featuring on the pages of Marie Claire very soon.



The best, however, was left to last with the show of the day belonging to Yves Saint Laurent. A mix of luxe fabrics and strong graphic lines, the collection was just the antidote to the cold, wet Paris weather and the ideal pick-me-up for a fashion pack, jaded after four weeks of back-to-back shows.
