Oscars 2008: The trends

Forget talk of a toned-down Oscars, this year's red carpet was as glamorous as any we've seen in the past.

With Hollywood's A-list starved of attention for so much of the season, the stars had gone all out to make an impression in front of the cameras.

Statement jewellery featured heavily, as did bright colours and sweeping shapes.

Those who hot-footed it straight onto our best-dressed list include Cameron Diaz, who pulled off that Californian-cool thing with aplomb – her messy hairdo the perfect foil for her structured dress.

Full marks for originality to Best Actress winner Marion Cotillard, who wore a mermaid-inspired dress by Jean Paul Gaultier to collect her very first Oscar.

Anne Hathaway also looked stunning in a red Marchesa gown, setting two key Oscar trends at once: red being the colour of the evening, featuring also on Katherine Heigl, Heidi Klum and Helen Mirren, and Marchesa being a popular choice for other young starlets, with Jessica Alba also choosing the design house to dress her for the event.

While strapless designs featured heavily, the most popular silhouette of the evening was asymmetric with Hilary Swank and Amy Ryan both showing off the classic shape.

With a number of Hollywood's finest expecting at the moment, flowing gowns were also a popular choice, with Jessica Alba choosing an empire-line strapless dress in flattering maroon to cover her bump and Cate Blanchett favouring a halterneck design by Dries Van Noten. Nicole Kidman, meanwhile, whose pregnancy is still hardly visible, wore a custom-made black Balenciaga gown and fabulous 1,399-carat diamond necklace designed by Mick Jagger's girlfriend, L'Wren Scott.

I think Anne Hathaway looks truly stunning. The colour is perfect for her skin tone and the cut is extremely flattering. Marion Cotillard also deserves major style points for a more risky choice. These red carpet events so often turn into a parade of stars wearing identical, safe gowns, so it's nice to see an actress push the boat out a little.
