Winehouse steals Brits show

Amy Winehouse performing at the Brit Awards 2008

Sir Paul McCartney and Amy Winehouse put their troubles behind them (him, divorce; her, rehab) to deliver faultless performances at last night’s Brit Awards.

A healthy-looking Amy took to the stage with Mark Ronson (winner of Best British Male) to perform their hit single, Valerie – Winehouse even found the time to mouth ‘I love you’ to incarcerated husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

Sir Paul McCartney forgot his divorce woes as he stepped up to receive a Lifetime Achievement award - and raised the roof with crowd-pleasing performances of Beatles classics like Hey Jude.

Kylie Minogue, who picked up the awards for Best International Female, and Leona Lewis also put in stand-out performances. Leona, in a voluminous purple dress, belted a rousing version of her single Bleeding Love, while Kylie gave a dramatic performance of Wow, backed by eight dancers clad in metallic jumpsuits and face masks.

Kate Nash saw off fierce competition from Bat For Lashes, KT Tunstall, Leona Lewis and PJ Harvey for Best British Female.

The Foo Fighters picked up Best International Album, but did not collect their award in person.

Other winners of the night included Arctic Monkeys (double winners with Best British Album and Best British Group), Mika, who gave an excitable acceptance speech for Best Breakthrough Act award and Kanye West (Best International Male).

But it was old favourites Take That who got the warmest reception when they picked up two awards – Best Live Act and Best Single for Shine.

Accepting the award, Jason Orange said: ’We are so honoured. We're still trying to dance at 37. There are the odd slipped discs and Howard got a punctured lung. But here we are before you, battered and bruised, but dead chuffed.’

Healthy looking Amy Winehouse? Seriously? Was the same show broadcast everywhere?

I saw a pitifully thin woman struggling enormously to stand up straight, failing miserably to sing within a bar of the rest of the band. Whoever invited her up on stage in that state should be losing their jobs.
