George Clooney made UN peace envoy
George Clooney has officially been made a United Nations peace envoy in New York.
The actor's role will see him encourage the UN's peacekeeping missions around the world. Clooney has joined eight other peace messengers including actor Michael Douglas.
The 46-year-old was supported by his parents at the ceremony with UN secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Clooney was chosen for the job to use his celebrity status to focus the world's attention on international issues.
The star had just returned from a visit to Darfur last week where he has continued to highlight the plight of the Sudanese population in a state of civil war. Clooney is co-founder of Not On Our Watch, a humanitarian group that concentrates global attention on the Darfur region and has raised over £4.67 million for the area.
Clooney told the BBC: 'You hope that somehow…if you just shine a really bright light on these things it's harder to get away with it.' He also urged the world's governments to send the new African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur the helicopters and radios required to do its job.
When asked to compare Clooney's day job as an actor with his new UN role, the actor said: 'An Oscar's a nice thing to have in your life, but this isn't just sort of an honour, it's a responsibility.'

If our stars put as much money into charities as they did their looks (ie:plastic surgery, botox etc) then I doubt many of these problems would still be around-think of the thousands (if not millions) most of them have just sitting in a bank account that they most likely will never ever use as they are constantly earning more-it's all very well attending huge charity dues (which cost a fortune to hold!!),but it's all about what they get out of it isn't it-a bit more press coverage!!
