How to get into ...

Depp's dramatic donation

By Lucy Hutchings  on Tuesday 15 January 2008

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp has thanked Great Ormond Street hospital for saving the life of his daughter, by donating £1 million.

The Sweeney Todd actor unexpectedly arrived at the hospital yesterday, where he made the donation as a thank you to staff. His daughter Lily-Rose spent nine days at Great Ormond Street last year after she suffered from kidney failure after contracting E.coli poisoning.

Depp later said of the ordeal, 'It was the most frightening thing we have ever been through. It was hell. He gratefully added, 'But the magic is that she pulled through beautifully. Great Ormond Street was terrific, a great hospital.'

It is the latest in a series of gestures that the generous actor has made to the hospital. In November he spent four hours at the hospital reading stories, while dressed as his Pirates of the Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow. He also invited five doctors and nurses from the hospital to attend the premiere of his latest film, Sweeney Todd.

This is what celebrities should be doing with their money.

I think that was a very nice of Johnny Depp to do as the money will certainly help the hospital, and to invite five doctors and nurses also to his new film was nice of him, Even though he is rich he seems to be a very nice person who hasnt let fame go to his head or forget how he got there either as not everyone is gratful that we as the public help to make them money also besides them working very hard to get there themseleves.

Restores your faith in human nature doesn't it? What a lovely story on a wet, miserable January day.

THIS IS WHAT BEING FAMOUS SHOULD BE ALL ABOUT!
I KNEW THERE WERE EVEN MORE REASONS WHY I ADORE THIS ACTOR. GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR OTHERS WHO TAKE THEIR STARDOM FOR GRANTED.

What a fantastic gesture! Its lovely to hear about an actor, being a proud parent for a change, instead of something awful.

He's not only georgous but a genuine person.
He showed his appreciation with the best gift he could have given the hospital. The money will go towards saving more little lives like his daughters.
Wish I were there to see him read stories to the kids with his pirate outfit on. What a lovely human being.

Well done Johnny! This is a marvellous way to show recognition for the good work done at Great Ormond Street. More people should follow suit with donations of their time and money. I do wonder why Great Ormond Street and all other hospitals aren't fully funded by the Government?!!
