Damien Hirst to paint David Beckham

David Beckham

Damien Hirst has agreed to paint a portrait of David Beckham, to raise money for the BBC's Sport Relief charity.

Hirst was last year named the world's most expensive living artist when a diamond-encrusted skull he created, entitled For the Love of God sold for a record £50 million. He is set to now make millions for the charity, when the picture is auctioned in March.

The BBC will film the sitting for the portrait, which is one of a series of celebrated artists painting Britain's best sports stars. Scottish painter Jack Vettriano will paint Zara Philips, and Lewis Hamilton will also be immortalised, although the artist is yet to be confirmed.

A spokesman for the BBC commented on the Hirst and Beckham pairing and said, 'It’s a fantastic way to raise funds. David might even want to buy the work himself.'

Great way to raise money. It should be take as an example in other countries (I'm thinking about Italy, why we don't have such fantastic ideas??).
