The ever-gorgeous Rupert Penry-Jones is set to quit BBC spy show Spooks.

In a move which will disappoint female viewers nationwide, Penry-Jones apparently wants to confront 'new challenges' (is defeating terrorism not enough?).

According to today's tabloids, the actor is currently discussing exactly how he'll leave the series, which will be filmed next spring, although a source dismally notes, 'Spooks has a habit of killing off its main characters.'

Rupert isn't the only lead actor whose fate hangs in the balance, in a recent episode, Hermione Norris's character Ros was 'killed off' for her own safety, but the door has been left open for a possible return.

'The situation is still under discussion and we don't yet know which of the cast will be returning,' said an insider.

I was gutted when I heard that Rupert was leaving spooks. It won't be the same without him.

It is sad that Penry-Jones has left Spooks. I have to admit that I didn't feel the same when Macfadyen left in season 3. The transition from Macfadyen's Tom Quinn to Penry-Jones Adam Carter was flawlessly done and didn't leave any regrets. Don't get me wrong, I am a great admirer of Macfadyen and have great respect for Penry-Jones. Maybe because I did experience Macfadyenâ€™s leaving years after his actual farewell to Spooks and knew his wonderful work after the series.

Having said that I also appreciate Richard Armitage. Nonetheless, I felt more than sad to see Penry-Jones leave. His Carter to me was the culmination of what I fathom a secret service agent to be: athletic, active, smart and hugely attractive (though this cannot be true in reality, can it?), shortly: the personification of MI5.

Good-bye, Adam Carter; and a lot of success and good luck with your further career, Rupert Penry-Jones. Thanks for the memories so far.
